Re: Race Retro 2015 - Feb 20th - 22nd
One week to go to Race Retro.
The SHMAC stand is finally coming together.
The SHMAC Stand is in Hall 1 stand no J46.
We are in prime postion with the Richard Burns Tribute Display right in front of us.
Dave C has his Richard Burns Tribute display. For sure Dave will have more models in this display than they will have on the real car display!!!
Steve N between treading the boards is bringing along his Retro Rallycross display.
I am going to put on a Group B display but trying not to but the well known liveries in the display.
Mick H is doing a display around the V8 engine
Paul H has his 1:18th scale Le Mans winners up and running.
Ari Vatanen is down to drive a number of cars on Saturday & Sunday on the rally stage.
Check out other show info on www.raceretro.com
If you are a forum member please come along and say hello.
Cheers
Chris

Chris,
Just a thought, if you'd like some non-rallycross Group B cars for your display, let me know!! I have one or two rally MG Metro 6R4s, and an ice-racing 6R4 too, you know!!
Let me know and I can bring some with me tomorrow.
Cheers, Steve

I am OK with what's in there at the moment

Simon,
It's utterly wing-tastic!
http://passionford.com/forum/pictures-video-and-photoshop-forum/103192-norwegian-gatebil-on-ice.html
It's in amongst a load of Fords in the first post of the thread.
It was Jan-Arthur Iversen's 'Glomma Papp' sponsored 6R4 and took me half a margarine tub's worth of plastic to create!
It's one of three models I've got in Chris' Group B showcase. The others are the Toleman/ Lee Paris-Dakar 1988 6R4 made from a Vitor kit and modified with the correct colour scheme (I used my painting by decals technique ) and the Cooper/ Price 6R4 from last year's Race Retro Rallystage. I made this model within a week of the event, making my own decals, not the ones on sale now through eBay. Enjoy!!
Cheers, Steve

Re: Race Retro 2015 - Feb 20th - 22nd
Just noticed on Twitter that this crowd central-scanning.co.uk have a stand at Race Retro, maybe some of the people going might be able to suss them out for doing 3D prints of 1/43 scale parts

Sounds a useful idea! I'll try to find them and have a chat when I'm there on Sunday.
For information, the forward party of Chris 'CDM' Derbyshire and Dave 'Zeus' arrived on site this afternoon and have set up the displays ready for the public arriving in the morning. Sunday seems a long way off, can't wait to join them....

Re: Race Retro 2015 - Feb 20th - 22nd
Having been to all bar a couple of Race Retros, thought that this first offering from the new organisers had a few rough edges but overall was as good as ever from a visitors perspective. From some of the stallholders I talked to they thought numbers of punters and spend was down but how many other shows in recent years could that apply to? The cow shed autojumble was poorer however many stallholders from there now seemed to be in one of the main halls and who could blame them bearing in mind how cold it was! Some lovley machinery on show including the RS1700T and the Simmonite Evoque amongst others and the amazing Fiat LSR car, would love to have heard that fire up! Ari V seemed to be getting mobbed and followed everywhere by a trail of people with pens at the ready but he seemed to be smiling none the less.
Great to meet up with Chris (CDM) and Dave (Zeus) on Saturday, sorry if I missed anyone else as had planned to get back to the stand later but had my aged dad in tow and he was feeling the cold a bit more than me so left mid way thru the second rally car run! Fantastic display of models and great to see Dave's Richard Burns collection right next to the full scale versions on the Burns foundation stand! No one could have failed to pick up on the guys enthusiasm and knowledge including a certain Dave Richards amongst many others! Hope Andy H remembered the models he'd bought from me
The rally stage was the same format as the last few years and and seems to offer the right balance of viewing comfort without putting anyone in any real danger barring a complete freak incident. The only thing I could perhaps say is that the mix of professional drivers with amateurs/enthusiasts on the road at the same time can make for the odd buttock clenching moment or two. Ironically unless I missed it the lack of the go karts made for a much better experience this year however I do have two personal observations/recommendations:
A) Its time for Tony Mason to hand over the mike. Having got used to his ramblings in recent years he really seemed to be struggling on Saturday at least and it was quite sad to hear even though after a few minutes I stopped hearing what he was trying to say so perhaps the PA packed in.
B) There were quite a lot of replicas and cars without any real provenance on the stage on Saturday and whilst this helps I guess to increase the variety for the casual fan it does rather detract from some of the more serious machinery on show especially when in the main they arnt driven with any real gusto. Quite what the 240Z "Samurai" race car was doing on a rally stage I 'm not sure Having said that to see the Astra 4S and Dai chucking the Octavia around was worth turning up for on thier own.
Got lots of pics am just time poor this week so will try to get a few posted in dur course.
Cheers
Chris

Re: Race Retro 2015 - Feb 20th - 22nd
Hi Chris,
Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself on Saturday. I''d loved to have seen Dai in the Octavia - if it was anything like his efforts on the stage in the Scoobie last year, it would have been well worth the effort of going outside in the cold!!
From the little of Mr Mason's amblings I heard, I have to agree with you 100%. Sounded like his spring was running out and he needed winding up again. Quite painful to listen to!! Thankfully, I didn't have to listen for long as the rally stage only ran the once (the afternoon session was rained off) and most of the morning session I was alongside 'Jumping Jeff Williamson' in his cute and cuddly Mini 1275GT.
OK, not the most exotic piece of machinery on the stage but Jeff really gave some and it was my first experience of being driven by someone using the left foot braking technique I've read so much about over the years! Thank you SO much, Jeff, a wonderful experience, even if we did get towed back to the paddock. Twice!
It was fantastic meeting up with Chris and Dave again, a chap Steve whom I've bought a load of cars from through eBay over the years and whom I hope will be joining us on here, and the delightful Mr Bill Price, former Team Manager at BL's Competitions Department.
I managed to keep my wallet in my pocket until Chris took me into the cowshed autojumble and I came away with an old Dinky Morris 1100 which I've laready stripped ready to make into the works 4x4 rallycross 1100 and a couple of, keep it quiet, Fords! Ahem!! I now have a mark 1 Capri and an Anglia 105E which will be morphing into early rallycross cars in the coming weeks/ months. Keep it quiet, thogh, I have a reputation to keep!
A great day out, again, and I'm looking forward to repeating the experience in 2016.
Cheers, Steve

Re: Race Retro 2015 - Feb 20th - 22nd
I should also mention that my rallycross model display, featuring 27 of my rallycross 1/43 models, finished up with a 28th model when Simon delivered my Steve Palmer Panasonic 6R4 to the cabinet, straight from his workshop at home! Anopther lovely build, Simon, and a wonderful addition to my Steve Palmer rallycross collection.
Two more models to make and I'll have them all, I believe - the white over blue colour scheme he used in Europe and the multi-coloured livery used later, which is so colourful, it's going to be one of my 'paint by decal' cars!!
My 1971 Mini Clubman 4x4 rallycross car was a talking point with Bill Price. I'll be following things up with him and asking Brian Culcheth, who rallycrossed the car, more details about it.
I've lost count of the number of new projects I need to do as a result of attending Race Retro yesterday! These vary from the Triumph 1300 4X4 ralycross car to the blue and yellow MG Metro 6R4 of Lawrence Gibson, running as GB1 to making Jeff Williamson's Mini!
Talking with Dave Cox, I will make another Mk3 Escort rallycross model (as used by Martin Schanche, John Welch, John Smith, Barry Squibb and many others) and have the body moulded so others can make their own models too. I've no idea how to go about that, but I'm sure some of you guys could help me out!
Cheers, Steve

Chris (Sal)
Good to put faces to names and thanks for your comments about our model displays. Good to many other forum members too coming along to say hello
Once I get my photos sorted out I will put some up on the forum.
Your other comments Chris are spot on.
Can someone please tell Tony Mason to hand over the mike it really is getting painful to listen to. Sorry Tony it is time to retire
The Autojumble was poor, no it was very poor. Even going around before you I didn't find any real nuggets. I have been autojumbling from both sides of the table for many years and when you see stalls selling sweets, jewellery, watches and big stalls selling tools that is the biggest clue that they are not getting proper jumblers on board. The jumblers always moan whether they have had a good day or not. But it was fairly clear things were not brilliant.
There was a lot of talk about the rally stage. I wont go into the reasons why, suffice to say that the organisers thought they could do it better, but realised they didn't have all the contacts. The Group B rally club has fallen apart again.
The Richard Burns Collection had 4 cars but nobody selling the virtues of the RB Foundation. There was nobody reminding everyone tens years on what the foundation is all about. A FREE opportunity was missed. Chatting with the chap looking after the cars he was absolutely fuming that nobody from the RB Foundation was there on any day. He was going back to have some words...
I have been to every Race Retro 11 I think? The crowds were well down on previous years. Friday is usually very busy but you could see a lot of carpet this year.
The cost cutting was fairly clear to see. Hopefully, they will listen and see they need to do something to breath some new life into the show, before its too late.
Having said all that you get out of life what you put into it and we did have an excellent show, but more later.
Cheers
Chris

Great find, Chris!
Yes, lovely Firenza V8 sounds at full chat!!
Try this video too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr2hmkfUiGE
Perhaps that's your head bobbling about in the open-face helmet in the Sierra near the start of the video? Many thanks for the use of the helmet on Sunday, Chris. The memories of the Mini 1275GT hurtling around the course and Jumping Jeff left-foot braking will stay with me for a very long time!!
Cheers, Steve
