My new 6R4 project
I have started work whilst been off work with my shoulder on my new 6R4 project. Its of Willie Rutherford and Bryan Harris in the Sanyo Rallying With Comet MG Metro 6R4, on the 1986 Lombard RAC Rally. I have spent the last 2 days scanning logo's, then drawing them in better detail on photoshop. I have also measured the size each decal needs to be on the model and converted the logo to its relevant size in photoshop, so when it prints out on a sheet of A4 paper it will be the exact size to the mm
I have got a spare shell all ready to be primed etc. Just waiting for my arm to get better. I have sent the artwork on to the company to get a price and get them printed. Hopefully it will look as good as I want it to be. I am very fussy with detail so it might take a while to get it just right. I will keep progress of news as and when on here though.
For the moment I had a quick play in photoshop and just done a preview image just so some of you know the livery I am doing
Cheers

Re: My new 6R4 project
Oops, dont want to get people annoyed but I was only planning on building this as a one off for my collection
If I am happy with my own after I have done it then I might think about doing a small run of 5 or 10. Ill see what happens with the first one though.
BTW the image was of the logo's zoomed out at 25% on photoshop. When you zoom into 100% it is very very clear and no bluryness

Thankyou all for the kind words! Cant wait to get started on painting it
If I am happy with the quality of the decals when I use them, I will get a couple of sets to sell on. Ill sort it out though after I have completed the model and let you all know

Good luck with your project & hope the arm heals quickly. If possible I would like a set of decals as well if you do sell them.

I might be able to help you on that front Nicky!....6r4nicky wrote:Thankyou all for the kind words! Cant wait to get started on painting it
I have a Rover Vitesse touring car kit here for the Sanyo liveried entrant at the 1983 Spa 24 Hours, and there is a colour swatch attached to the instructions with a reference to...
'Azzurro Blue - Fiat 408'
Computervision Blue is 'Fiat Azzurro Blue 437', and the Sanyo blue looks a pretty similar colour, so I think they are giving me an option here - either 'Azzurro Blue' OR 'Fiat 408'. A quick internet search reveals that 408 is actually called 'Adriatic Blue' 1975-1977 (as a solid colour) OR 'Blue Jet' 2001 to date (as a metallic colour).
It obviously won't be the latter colour as that is not only metallic, but also wasn't available in 1986! So I reckon if you sprayed it either 'Fiat Azzurro Blue 437' OR 'Fiat Blue Jet 408' then you would be pretty close!
However, please do take this with a pinch of salt and check the colours beforehand, as I'd hate to have advised you incorrectly!
Re: My new 6R4 project
They look superb Nicky. Like Juha this is one on my wanted list
If you do get a few sets of decals done, I would definitely take a set please

Re: My new 6R4 project
Cheers Jim and Simon, its great to have such great feedback off everyone it means alot and will help give me the motivation if ever I have an off day
David, many thanks for the advice with the paint. I am going to be using a taimya spray once again (the same spray cans like I used for the Per Eklund camel/clarion 6R4)
The only problem is that I have a choice of 2 blue's that are very similar to the Fiat Azzurro Blue 408. They are tamiya ts10 (french blue) and tamiya ts23 (light blue) I found a great forum where someone has sprayed spoons so you can see the difference in each colour. There isnt much difference between the tamiya french blue and the light blue. I am leaning towards the french blue. If you can just spare me a minute and check the link and see if you think it would be best with french blue or light blue.

Re: My new 6R4 project
Jesus mate, there isn't much in it between the two is there!
Difficult call in all honesty - unless you have the actual car infront of you, and you fancy a bit of 'spooning' lol!
Would one of these help you at all? You could always lay the spoon over the top to see how close it was....

Re: My new 6R4 project
David, many thanks for taking time to look for me, appreciate it
Tell me about it! There is very little difference between the two. I might just try the first car with the french blue and then do a 2nd with the light blue and see which one is best for future reference.
I would like to do the earlier 86 Sanyo car of Rutherfords too, at some point. I did buy a few pics of his 6r4 on the 86 manx national, 1 with a perfect side on shot for the event plate. That pic was after he had a crash, in which for the remainder of the event he was using a spare 6r4 rear spoiler from Ken Wood with Golden Wonder crisps on it. But thats something for later on. I just want to concentrate on getting this car sorted, and finish my Per Eklund rallycross car when the decals arrive
Cheers for the link mate too, I already have it. It was the main base for the logo but I decided to draw the logo in photoshop as it wasnt great when close up. Again, me probably been fussy but I dont believe in spending all the time prepping, painting decalling a model up if I am not happy with something. I dunno maybe I have high expectations?

Re: My new 6R4 project
Not at all Nicky - if a job's worth doing it's worth doing right!
I too am very particular, fussy and pedantic when it comes to my own artwork. I don't use Photoshop though as I redraw all of my artwork in Illustrator. It's not so important to use Illustrator (or another vector-based drawing program) when you print out your own decals on an inkjet or laser printer, but it is vital if you ever send artwork off to a pukka screenprinting company, as they need to be able to separate each colour onto individual printing plates or screens.
Have you contacted Red Firecracker yet to see what form they accept artwork in?
I also noticed that your nearside 'Comet / Greenwoods' decal is slightly wrong mate. Rather than use the same as the offside, the Comet logo needs to be moved over so that it aligns with the left hand end of the white Greenwoods block doesn't it? You are more than likely aware of that anyway...
...as I'm sure you are regarding moving all of the decals closer together so that you save material, and also costs as well.
Just my 2p's worth of course mate - as a form of help rather than any form of criticism!

Re: My new 6R4 project
David, great to know im not alone with that attitude! might take twice as long to do the job but at least I will be happy with it and I wont be thinking about what I could have done better after I finished the model.
Red firecracker ideally want pdf, psd or tiff files with the artwork on. Mine was sent in psd. Just awaiting an email back with a price for them to be printed.
Cheers for noticing the little mistake with the comet logo I did realise after a put the picture up on here. I sorted it after though along with moving the text for "GREENWOODS" over so it sits close to the window vent.
Just a case of going to get the paint later today, and also try and get hold of the laser printer I want too. The rest of my non 6R4 model collection is going to be put up for sale later today to help fund towards the printer.

Re: My new 6R4 project
That is a class wee project Nicky..Well done on the artwork ! Ya can count me onto your little preorder list...? would love to have it and would save me the trouble drawing up a 1 off for myself..
Re: My new 6R4 project
Thankyou Gary. The artwork I thought was quite easy. I have done alot of skins (liveries) on metro 6r4 3d models for computer games for years so have had to draw logos, resize etc for them so the procedure is pretty much the same.
I have had a reply from Kelvin at Red firecracker and I am very happy with the price to have the decals printed. So its now just a case of sending payment and letting Kelvin do the rest. I do have to say I'm getting very excited lol
I also bought a laser printer this morning so I can do some of my own decals for the future. I have just bought some decal paper from Les so might have a go over the weekend at drawing up another 6r4 livery to pass my time whilst waiting for my arm to get abit better so I can start getting the Sanyo car prepped for painting

Superb work
Please can I have a set of decals or built model, you must do a batch of these. One of the ones on my wishlist for a very very long time.

Re: My new 6R4 project
Cheers for the comments Dave
I dont want to come across as being big headed but to do the decals is quite easy compared to what I had to do when I was doing computer game liveries. The problem with the one game I done the liveries on, was that the arches etc were all on different areas of the sheet to the rest of the car. But when you load it on the 3d model in the game it all went together. As you can see below. Thats where my decal making has come from (and I have spent near enough 10 years doing that)
From this (using photoshop)
To this (in game)
And I also done the whole engine bay too! This took alot of time but like I have said before I am very fussy with my work
