How to display?
Hi guys;
As many of you might know that I move to a new flat recently and after a month, last night I started to unpack my models in 1/18 scale.
I have two wide and one narrow Ikea Billy cabinets which I was also using at the old place. due to the number of models, I can only display them in line. so only the front of the models are visible as I have to squeeze 7 models for each shelf.
so, here is my question; how should I display the models? in which order you guys display?....
1- by brand (Subaru, Mitsubishi etc.)
2- by model (Escort, Focus etc.)
3- by rally (for instance Rally monte carlo 2000....)
4- by driver (Loeb, Solberg)
5- by Era (80's, 90's)
6- by sponsors (marlboro...)
etc...
look forward hearing your comments and suggestions.
some photos might also help this thread to be more colorful. so, how about sticking your displays?

Re: How to display?
Omer sorry mate I can not help you here. I just dont have the room to display even my small collection lol
Probably if I had a collection like yours I would put them in order like. All Fords, Subarus Mitsubishi's ect. Now just my opinion. I just wish I had the bother of deciding.
Fantastic Collection of 1:18 models.

Re: How to display?
Omer, I hate when all you see are rows of Subarus or Fords etc. I actually organised them in oldest event to newest. Any multiple cars in the same event are then in car number. I feel this way you get a great feel of the evolution of rallying to the modern era.
This is an old photo but gives you the idea, just that the Mustang is way out of order as it represents a car run on a Tarmac event in 2008 and should be lower down in the cabinet.

Re: How to display?
thank you guys for all your comments and suggestions.
till now I could only succeed to unpack around 20 models and many to go.
I guess this time I will follow your suggestions and will try to line them up according to year & rally.
they already look nice on the same shelf with different colors

Re: How to display?
I have one bertby and a expedit shelving unit.
The expedit has 3 custom shelves with Perspex covers and 1 Perspex shelf and led lighting. These have 4 cars in each. Only one is set up now as a safari scene. The others are gonna be monte in snow and uk muddy probably. I'm still consolidating under massive pressure from missus.
The bertby is 12 shelf conversion and is gonna be group b exclusively.
Then I guess I'll rotate the cars from storage and refresh the shelves every so often to keep it fresh. To be honest the last thing I want is a rally car park. I want a bit of dynamism and context IYSWIM?
Good luck it's an ever evolving thing this collecting lark anyway
I think Gerald has the right idea wiv his museum

Re: How to display?
Omer, I've got two wall-mounted display cabinets with my 1/43 scale models in and have ordered them alphabetically by make, with the oldest model first through to the most recent. All of my models are BMC/ British Leyland/ ARG/ MGR and related brands. It's not just the rally cars but road and race cars I'm interested in too.
The display cabinets are from 'Picture Pride' and have glass shelves. I specified mirrored backs for them so I can see all around each mode. Or at least I could, but the cabinets are pretty full now. There's not much gap between cars and I'm hoping SWMBO will let me have a third cabinet soon!
The first cabinet has Austin models, followed by Daimlers, Jaguars and Land Rovers through to Triumphs, Vanden Plas and Wolseleys in the bottom of the second cabinet. Recently, the 6R4s I've bought or made have meant I've sneaked them in where I can, so they are not in strict order. Bad me!
I guess it's a bit easier with the smaller 1/43 models compared with the 1:18s you have. Cheers, Steve

Re: How to display?
Afternoon
I think it is down to personal taste, my own collection is arranged in alphabetical order by manufacturer, then by model ( oldest to most recent)
E.g
Manufacturer ford
Cortina, mk1 escort, mk2 escort, rst1700, rs 200, 3 door sierra, 4 door sierra 2wd, 4 door sierra 4wd etc.....
Where I have a number of models that merit a sub section I will make that up by model, for example rothman escorts Malcolm wilson or rothman mk2 general. By event such as Manx.
I also display by model maker eg kmd, cpb, aps etc these tend to be in their own cabinets rather than as a group of models in my main collection.

Re: How to display?
I like the diorama idea very much which I would like to build a rally garage at some point. but need a huge space for that as per my calculations I need 145 cm length for the basejusali wrote:I have one bertby and a expedit shelving unit.

but a small scenery diorama might work for me as well. maybe I will try to spare a shelf in my billy...
re. Gerard's collection, I think that is the best way to display a collection. actually, his collection is more like a rally history full of books, overalls, helmets, car parts, rally stickers etc...
model cars is just apart of his lovely museum.
he is lucky to have a spare building that he can exhibit his passion.
thanks Steve for the suggestion.Hampton Caught wrote:Omer, I've got two wall-mounted display cabinets with my 1/43 scale models in and have ordered them alphabetically by make, with the oldest model first through to the most recent. frankly to say, my previous line up was very similar. but while unpacking some of my cars and just put them without order in the cabinet, I realize that different cars, colors looks colorful and nice.
thats was the reason I would like to share and learn you guys set up.
I think this time, I will go with early years to todays cars in mixed order by years....
that sounds like a very well organized collection in there. I am sure all of us have one or couple of favorite models would like to display separately or in a special way.cowfeeder wrote:Afternoon

a safari diorama or a jump or some photos of the original car in action or like you mentioned Manx rally competitors in line at the start of a stage?
I guess I should also create something like that in order to make the collection more colorful.
I will see how much I can squeeze and create a small display area....
thank you guys for sharing your ideas and suggestions.
if you guys can stick some photos of your collections in here, we can also see some different ideas

Billy,
You seem to have some 'seepage' in your first photograph, or hadn't you dusted before getting the camera out!?
Great displays. I'm very impressed. Cheers, Steve

Re: How to display?
They are great cabinets but unfortunately not dustproof - have them myself. Was toying with adding draught excluder strips around the edge to reduce dust build up - had anyone tried that?
