Rallycross Meeting: Mallory Park 22nd July - Anyone Going?
Wondered if anyone from here is heading on over to watch the rallycross at Mallory Park?
I'm heading up there myself and if anyone else is going to be there for the day, would like to meet up and put faces to 'names'!
Info is here: http://www.rallycrossuk.com/round-3
Let me know if you'll be there. There are even some Retro Rallycross cars appearing, including a Manta and Rob Gibson's MG Metro 6R4! Come along and have a great day's racing and cheer on Rob Gibson. It'll be sensational.
Cheers, Steve

Re: Rallycross Meeting: Mallory Park 22nd July - Anyone Going?
Bumperty Bump!
David 'Cowley' and I are heading to Mallory Park this Sunday for the rallycross meeting. The entry list is bulking up nicely, with a whole series of Divisions including Minis (proper ones and BMWs, separately), Suzuki Swifts, Hot Hatches, Modified, Supercars (inc Imprezas, Citroen C4s, Focuseses (Foci?) and even a 4X4 Ka) and the bit I'm particulalrly looking forward to, the Retro Ralycross.
Retro Rallycross is divided into two divisions, for pre 1982 and 82-87. The post 82 entry is low in numbers but high in interest: 6R4, Delta Integrale and Manta. Pre 82 includes Minis, Escort BDA and a Beetle. The full entry is here:
http://www.rct-entry.com/entries_BC_20120722.php
Hope to see you there. Between us, we'll try to get some pics up and a review of the event.
Cheers, Steve

Re: Rallycross Meeting: Mallory Park 22nd July - Anyone Going?
Hi Steve, I did have David text me about the event but I am afraid I work weekends (and to top it off night shifts too! lol) If I had the chance to be there, I definately would have come along to meet you and David. As I said to David, what more would a bloke want? 6R4's and great company :-)
Have a great time and will hopefully catch you at an event later in the year. At the moment I know I am definately going to the Mewla rally on the august bank holiday weekend, and also the classic motor show at the nec. If you (or anyone on here) are going to either let me know and ill meet up and be nice for a chat and put a face to the name :-)

Re: Rallycross Meeting: Mallory Park 22nd July - Anyone Going?
Hi Nicky,
Thanks for your message and sorry to hear you won't be able to meet up his time around. My next scheduled motorsport is also the August Bank Holiday weekend and it'll be the next round/s of the British Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill. The event is across both the Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, if that makes it slightly more accessible for you?
I hadn't thought of the Classic Car Show... Hmmmmm! Maybe Plenty of time to work that out. Mallory's firmly in my sights for now, looking forward to the racing and meeting up with David for the first time.
Cheers, Steve

Re: Rallycross Meeting: Mallory Park 22nd July - Anyone Going?
David (Cowley) Sims and I met up and enjoyed a superb day of rallycross action at Mallory Park yesterday.
There was much discussion about modelling, we showed each other some of our work and collections, discussed plans and ideas and I certainly got a firm idea for a near future rallycross project. Yesterday was the inaugural event for the new 'Retro Rallycross' formula
One of the cars competing was the 'Green & White Minispares' Clubman I remember hammering around rallycross circuits when I was a youngster. The owner and driver were very friendly and allowed me to take photographs inside and out, so I'll be modelling that shortly.
The main reason for my attending the meeting was to get some photos, measurements and other details of Rob Gibson's MG Metro 6R4, as I'm making a model for him, having impressed him in March when I showed him the model I'd made for myself!
I'll be finishing Rob's model before the next rallycross event, Lydden Hill over Bank Holiday weekend where I'll present it to him and have a ride in his 6R4. Bring it on!!
It was excellent meeting up with David, watching the racing, smelling the smells and hearing the sounds of full-bore motorsport. What wasn't so good was being burnt to a crisp despite the factor 60! I currently look like a lobster but I'll soon have the complexion of mueseli. Well, you know what they say: Every silver lining has a cloud!
Cheers, Steve

Hi Paul,
You are in luck!! In October, there are two meetings which you can chose from:
Pembrey October 7th
Croft October 28th.
Between now and then is the August bank holiday meeting at Lydden Hill, but you can't get much further south than that!!
Details are here, including the results of yesterday's meeting in time; http://www.rallycrossuk.com/
Hope you can make one or both of them. Cheers, Steve

Ooops! See you what mean, Paul! (Just for a moment, I was thinking 'north of ireland' would be the sea, unless you get to Iceland if you go far enough north!! I'll get my coat! before I do........
Looks like you'll have to wait until 21st October for the first round of the 2012/13 Irish Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park, with another two rounds during November.
Cheers, Steve

Mark, any chance of posting a piccie of the Clubman as it is/ was? It would be interesting to see if/ how the car's changed in the last 20 years.
I'm pleased to say the Mini was VERY competitive when it was working. Sadly, Lance Foster and crew had an early bath as an input shaft did something it shouldn't have done and there wasn't time to replace or repair it on the day. I asked and the car was last competitively used two years ago. Looks promising for the next rounds of the Retro Rallycross formula.
Cheers, Steve

Re: Rallycross Meeting: Mallory Park 22nd July - Anyone Going?
No worries Steve - I was aware that you did really know my surname, and had already assumed that it was a mere typo. Anyway, I have watermarked a 'handful' of photos with my name so that should be enough of a reminder by the time you've finished reading my post lol!
I enjoyed the day immensely - even more so when Rob Gibson himself reminded me of the fact that he hadn't seen me at a rallycross meeting for 10 years!
I did indeed get home safely thank you Steve - I hope you did too? I stayed for the presentations and it was the usual fairly boisterous affair with competitors spraying champagne all over their fiercest of rivals, for them to only laugh it off through gritted teeth!
Was great to see the action on track, and catch up with Rob and his wife Shirley again after all this time (!), and likewise to finally meet yourself Steve, and hear and see further evidence of some of your past models and future plans. Must make mental note not to leave it so long next time - hinting that Lydden Hill on August Bank Holiday weekend, or Croft at the end of October might well be on the cards. We'll see...
Anyway, here are a handful of photos from a very hot, bright, dry and dusty Mallory Park...
This Ka has got a 'Mark Lowe's Next Project' stamped all over it!...
And one especially for Ted - not competing I might add, but spotted when Steve and I had a walkabout...

Great shots, David. Thank you for posting them. Are you sure about your surname??
Hope you are able to get yourself a Dremel Vice and set about modifying some bodies (diecast ones!) with a cutting disc.
Here's the link to the 1/43 scale parts specialists we discussed on Sunday. My first email to them for an order will be heading their way this week! http://www.deroosautominiaturen.com/part43.htm
Glad you got the shot in there for Ted. How long before he sees it, I wonder?
Did any of the shots with Rob, myself, the model and the full-size version come out OK?
Cheers, Steve

Re: Rallycross Meeting: Mallory Park 22nd July - Anyone Going?
Many thanks Steve - they would have been a great deal better if my bigger lens hadn't developed a fault as I stated. Relying on a 18-55mm lens for this sort of photography meant that they have all been enlarged a bit to make it appear like I'm closer - hence the overall fuzzyness of the action shots.
Cheers for showing me your Dremel Vice, and the link to the site you mentioned. They both appear to be most useful for sure.
I most definitely have the shots you were asking about regarding yourself and Rob. I didn't post them however as I wasn't too sure if you wanted them posting now, or when you actually present the model to him at Lydden? If you want me to put them up now, just let me know mate, and I will be happy to oblige.

Juha,
The Lydden Hill meeting is August 26 and 27, that is the Sunday and the Bank Holiday Monday. The circuit is only a short drive from Dover if you're thinking of coming over. Cheers, Steve

Yes Juha, it's a two-day meeting I gather, on Sunday 26 & Monday 27 August. Here's the link to the British Rallycross Championship page (of which Lydden is Rd 4), and the Retro Rallycross page (Rd 2)...Juha wrote:Is the Lydden Hill meeting on Monday 27/8?

David,
If you could post them up, I would be very grateful indeed. I'd also like to use one as an avatar, as I'm one of the few 'regulars' who doesn't have one, but you can work out the reason for that!!
Very many thanks, Steve

Maybe I should drop in at Lydden instead of going home after the German WRC round.
I haven't been to a rallycross meeting in years. It would be nice to go to Lydden, my dad raced there in one of of his Minis in the early 70s.
