Was Juha Kankunen supposed to be there also ? The reason I ask is my "autograph" book. Must decide if its worth the trip.

Looking to do two days this year (Thurs/Fri) all being well. Accomodation sorted now for the tickets!
Didnt even get up to the rally stage last year so hopefully will make it this time but hope they sort the running out properly as there was no real theme or order the last couple of times I've been. Nice for photos though especially the yump.

James
Not heard anything about Juha Kankanoooonen appearing. But check out the GFS website as details change all the time.
Just heard from Trevor P that Juha K is down to drive a Mk2 Escort on a rally in the Neath area in August.
Cheers

Plans in place to head over this year on Thurs night and get a full day on Friday. Have to be back on saturday for notes for Sligo and rally on Sunday. So far, the lineup doesn't look terribly exciting.

have to agree james, been wanting to go over for ages, but that 'rally' line-up certainly won't tempt me this year..............

If there wasn't a single rally car there i would recommend that you go. It is an amazing spectacle. I am not very mechanically minded so getting close up to engines, gearboxes etc doesn't do it for me but the sheer breath of cars and automotive connected stands makes it well worth the visit. My fear this year is that I will not have enough time to see all the stands I would like to.

Re: 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed
Gents - its an extreme long shot as i have no idea whether the car im interested in will be present (it has appeared previously) but if a mk1 escort which won the 1970 Finnish 1000 lakes rally is present, could whoever attends take some pics of the rally plates and car from all angles for me? I think its owned by a gentleman based in Wales. Its an important car for my collection as it was the only large capacity twin cam to win an international rally. In a perfect world the plate pics would be square on so i can just photoshop them as my drawing skills are non existent.
Many thanks in advance.

How did you get on.
We had a great visit - usual problem -not enough time.
Met Dai LLewellin, Jean Ragnotti and Rod Millen for my autograph collection. Spoke to Paul Howarth who confirmed that the Merc service van in the rally service park is ex works and in works colours so took a few piccies of that.
No sign of the Mk 1.

Goodwood FOS 2013
James,
What were your highlights of the cars in action this year? Any surprises (good or bad?). I really must get there one year! Maybe next year if there's a 6R4 focus, being the 30th anniversary of the car's first public sighting! Oooer!
Cheers, Steve

Re: 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed
By heck it was hot. Paced myself a bit better this year. Goot in easily. They were reporting 1.5 hour queues to get in on Friday at 10am.
Hirvonen was brilliant up the hill on Friday, but apparently got bollocked for pulling donuts in front of the house. Personally I didnt see Carlos Sainz or Juha Kannkkunen (but heard Juha on the radio). The Pikes Peak Peugeot was there but not with Loeb behind the wheel.
They had changed the rally area quite abit this year for the better I would suggest. The stage was altered for the start and finish and the paddock area was bigger.
Trade stalls were poor. Modelissmo and CK were selling off loads of models, RM Toys and Scholto Models were the others. Picked up the new book about Alan Mann (Fords) and that was about it. Apparently the organisers have upd the price again and want quality trade stalls no autojumble stuff. Which all makes it pretty boring trade stands. Modelzone were not there for obvious reasons.
BUT If you have never been to GFS there IS something for everyone.

Re: 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed
Steve,
I had been once before but my "experience" this time was very much different. A spin with Brookes and then Owen on the rally stage in the Heat For Hire Sunbeam meant my time for exploring was almost completely eaten up. I am not complaining
The pass I got as a rally "passenger" allowed me access to the paddock at the top of the hill so I took some nice (I hope) shots up close of the Pikes Peak car as well as easy access to the drivers. Photos were taken on a friends camera so I will have to wait and see if I pressed the correct button:oops:
Extremely dusty but well worth the trip. Kankkunen was driving the Bentley and I did not see Sainz on friday and so assumed he was there later in the weekend. Access to rally drivers and rally cars was very easy. Probably every few years would do to visit but that said if there is an offer of a spin next year, try stopping me.
Roll on Eifel in 10 days time. Some mention on their website of a German modelbuilder having done models of the competing cars. Not sure exactly whats going on. I am anxiously waiting for our Porsche from last year - its been in the mail now for 3 weeks:affraid:

Wow, sounds awesome! How come I've not made it there to date?
Looking forward to some pics in due course, James. What a combo, Russell Brookes and the HFH Sunbeam! Have been watching some old videos these past few evenings, including the BBC2 coverage of the Lombard RAC 1985 with Russell Brookes featuring quite a lot, almost as much as Tony Pond.
Sounds like something for everyone! Next year! next year! Oh boy! Cheers, Steve

Thats why I joined facebook. There are some photos on facebook. Owen ha changed his profile picture on there to a superb John McIlroy shot of us on the stage. I also found a nice photo of Russell Brookes and myself nicly up over the jump. Being on the inside looking out its difficult to do the photo thing. Enda Garvey had the Pikes Peak 405 and his 205T16 there as well.
Yes there were 6R4's but there was also the full "family" of Toyota rally cars from the early Corolla 20 through all the celicas up to John Reids Corolla WRC.
Really, really worth the visit - something for everyone.
