Re: Cazzo's Project Thread
I've been sent over here from Facebook by a fellow member!
That idea of wrapping each model in kitchen roll so that you can re-use the thinners is a complete master stroke Colin! I guess it also saves on the thinners as well, as the kitchen roll will draw up the thinners over the model rather than having it a couple of inches deep. Am I right?
You watch you don't hurt yourself on the sharp edges of that old tin though!
Love the idea mate, and so nice to see a little mini production line in action - cheers for sharing!

Re: Cazzo's Project Thread
Cheers Lads,
There's no getting away from this site David, ya post something on ebay or facebook and it's not long before someone is chattin about it in here
The paper towel keeps the paint out of the thinners and then I pour it into a sealed container so I can reuse it again,
If you wrap the models in the paper then set it in the tin and pour the thinners over the models, swirl it round a few times every 10mins or so,
It also speeds up getting the paint off as the damp/soaked paper sticks to the model, then after half an hour lift it out and start to rub at it,
I would use the big blue roll paper towel as kitchen roll will break up too quick when you start to rub the model after it comes out of the thinners,
Here's the paper I use below,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-PACK-EMBOSSED-CENTRE-FEED-BLUE-PAPER-ROLLS-2PLY-/121124087332?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c338ee624
You can also wrap the model in a few sheets and just soak it in thinners by pouring it on and letting the model sit for about half an hour,
If you are doing a few models in one go then soak them in a tin,
To be honest Simon this was a fluke find after setting a model down where I shouldn't have lol
I only set it beside a bit of paper that had thinners on it for 5mins and the vapor started to melt the paint,
I was ragging and then thought that this could be a new way of stripping,

Re: Cazzo's Project Thread
And quite right too mate, why should we give all of our secrets away to Tom, Dick & Harry? At least doing it the way you have, there is potential to round up a few additional members in the process.
Thank you for the extra detail Colin - I will be sure to order some of that blue paper towel, and some appropriate thinners. Is it just household cellulose thinners that I'm after, or anything particularly specialised?
Cheers again mate - a great tutorial, well described with suitable photographs along the way. You're a star!

Re: Cazzo's Project Thread
Thanks Noel,
Yeah David it's just cellulose thinners, any motor factors should do it,
Mark if you want to send an S9 over I'll get it painted for you,
It will work out cheaper if you remove the floorpan, interior and all the plastic bits

Apologies for the delayed response Colin, but thank you for the continued advice and assistance.Cazzo wrote:Yeah David it's just cellulose thinners, any motor factors should do it
I managed to pick up a 5L tin of Tetrosyl 'Standard Thinners' - which I was assured was 'normal' cellulose thinners - from my local automotive paint suppliers for £7.14 inc VAT, which I was quite pleased with. I notice your tin also has Tetrosyl logos on it, so is that the same stuff that you use 'in the trade'? I also managed to pick up a large stainless steel dog bowl, which should be able to fit approx half-a-doxen bodyshells in it at a time.
Now, are there any H&S guidelines for handling and working with cellulose thinners in the quantity and conditions that I will be using it Colin, ie with regards to eyes, lungs or skin?
Many thanks again for all of your help Colin. It is so useful having someone amongst us who works 'in the trade'!

It's good to hear you got your hands on some thinners David + you got the same stuff I use,
H&S guidelines what are they?? lol
A few things to watch out for would be to use it in a well ventilated area as it can give you a sore head after a while,
Also check your hands for any cuts, if you have any cuts it will sting like a bag of angry wasps....
If you get it in you eyes just keep them closed and the pain will fade if about 15/20 seconds,
Don't rub your eyes or run them under the water tap as it just make it worse!!
Anything else is normal stuff like cleaning up spills quickly, not letting the kids near it and keep that stainless steel dog you have from licking the bowl

Another great post Colin - many many thanks. So nice to know that I've managed to source the same stuff that you use. I might have a crack at it over the weekend all being well. Cheers again mate.
